At 3:28 this morning, Miami time, a massive earthquake rumbled below the Caribbean - between Honduras, Belize and Guatemala. The magnitude has been reported between 7.1 and 7.4. Damage is considerable in Honduras and Belize, with power outages right up to the Mexican border at Chetumal. A Tsunami Alert has been issued for all countries bordering the Caribbean Sea.
The earthquake was only a few hundred miles from Miami. It's a reminder that we are not immune to quakes or tsunamis - in September, 2006 a 6.0 quake in the Gulf of Mexico rattled western Florida, was felt in parts of Dade County and prompted a Tsunami Alert for the entire Gulf Coast.
