Miami Art - 12 Years In 12 Minutes

Miami Conquistador has been attending Art Basel Miami Beach since its' inception in 2002 - when we came in right off the beach in our bathing suits ! We have all grown up now - Miami Beach, Art Basel and Miami Conquistador - and now arrive in hip and cutting edge fashion. Beginning in 2006 photos and video were taken in increasing frequency at all the December art shows - especially Art Basel, and the satellite fairs as well. This year we plan to cover every art work for sale -a formidable, but enjoyable task.

Play the video above for many of the past year's highlights.

Miami - Tourist Town To World Cultural Center In A Dozen Years

It is said that it takes 200 years for a city to become a cultural center like New York or Paris.

Until the 1980s Miami was a town for tourism in retirement. Art museums were few and fr between, with uninspiring collections and galleries almost nonexistent.

Then Cocadollars sitting in garages were put to work building a skyline. Shortly thereafter Miami Vice became the most popular show on TV. And people discovered Art Deco.

Sophisticated clientele began arriving from Manhattan - then from European and South American capitals as well.

But still , it was all about the party and the beaches.

In 2002 Art Basel arrived.Admission was $ 5 and people walked out with Picassos to take home to their Art Deco houses and condos.

The Show began to grow exponentially.

Big Money Started To Change Hands

                                                        Miami was becoming beyond cool.

                                                         Miami was becoming cultured.

                                                           Art Basel Was The Impetus.

The Largest Modern Art Fair In The World.

Art Acceleration. Everyone in the Art World has to have a Miami plan.

And while Miami is a very new reinvented city.

Miami Became The Center of the Modern Art World.
A Cultural Center In 12 Years , Not 200.

Art Basel - A 2013 Retrospective

Art Basel Miami Beach opens for the 12th year in a row on Thursday, December 5th and runs through Sunday, December 8th. Miami Conquistador and Miami Metroblogging have attended every year since 2002, when the show took up only half of Hall D at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Art Basel is like going to the greatest modern art museum in the world - where you can buy whatever you like right off the walls. Selections range from the sublime -

To the controversial.

To the Bizarre. This walking exhibit is not for sale.

All ages are welcome, though some parents may need to be open minded.

Modern art does not mean just from yesterday - it can really go back to 1900 or so - when Picasso got his start. Keith Haring's work , over 30 years old ,is still considered relatively new.

Best of all - Ar Basel has put Miami on the culture map - and Jet Setters from round the world fly in for the world's biggest modern art fair.
